Appropriating the entire footage of Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s opening statement addressing sexual assault allegations against him during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings, a custom script replaces his spoken words with candy-colored text slides accompanied by so-called elevator music. The text slides are punctuated by the moments of silence from the video feed of the proceedings, where Justice Kavanaugh pauses, catches his breath, or composes himself between words. The work both silences Justice Kavanaugh’s voice while simultaneously magnifying his entitlement, privilege and power.
