How to Remember the Black Book in Seoul
Single-channel video installation, color, sound [16min]
Structured like a book made of twelve chapters, each consisting of handwritten texts, the narrator in the video recounts the memory of seeing Robert Mapplethorpe’s Black Book as a teenager in Seoul. Together with the onscreen text, the video sequences include footage of the narrator attempting to reenact the images from the book. The work deals with conflicting racial power dynamics, rooted in gender, ethnicity and cultural background.
